[11] Mere Christianity [by C.S.Lewis] Mere Christianity is the most popular of C. S. Lewis's works of non-fiction, with several million copies sold worldwide. This book brings together Lewis's legendary radio broadcast talks in which he set out simply "to explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times". Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity's many denominations, Mere Christianity is Lewis's term for the essential Christian message -- the theological core on which diverse Christian traditions can stand together. He believes that "at the center of each (denomination) there is something, or a Someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks with the same voice". [12] The Chronicles of Narnia [by C.S.Lewis] Journeys to the end of the world, fantastic creatures, and epic battles between good and evil -- what more could any reader ask for in one book? The book that has it all is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, written in 1949 by Clive Staples Lewis. But Lewis did not stop there. Six more books followed, and together they became known as The Chronicles of Narnia. For the past fifty years, The Chronicles of Narnia have transcended the fantasy genre to become part of the canon of classic literature. Each of the seven books is a masterpiece, drawing the reader into a world where magic meets reality, and the result is a fictional world whose scope has fascinated generations.   This edition presents all seven books -- unabridged -- in one impressive volume. The books are presented here according to Lewis' preferred order, each chapter graced with an illustration by the original artist, Pauline Baynes. Deceptively simple and direct, The Chronicles of Narnia continue to captive fans with adventures, characters, and truths that speak to readers of all ages, even fifty years after they were first published. [13] Confessions [by Augustine] - St. Augustine was born to a pagan father and a Christian mother, who played an influential role in her son's intellectual and religious development. Augustine did not convert to Christianity until age 33, before that studying law, literature, and politics, and engaging in a life of sexual promiscuity. From North Africa, he traveled to Italy, where he met Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, a rhetorician who exposed Augustine to the teachings of Plato and Plotinus, and Christianity. Augustine was drawn to the religion and eventually succumbed to the power of the Christian God. He converted, and began writing. His thought and teachings on the Bible and his works of philosophy and theology set the basis for characteristics of later Western Christian culture, and greatly inspired humanists of the Renaissance, leaders of the Reformation, and modern religious figures and thinkers. St. Augustine returned to Hippo Regius (present-day Algeria) in 388, became the bishop there, and led the life of a monk. [14] Halley's Bible Handbook [by Henry H. Halley] - A Bible handbook including a concise Bible commentary, important discoveries in archaeology, related historical data, church history, maps, and move. Indexed. [15] The Pilgrim's Progress in Modern English [by John Bunyan] - Bunyan's allegory uses the everyday world of common experience as a metaphor for the spiritual journey of the soul toward God. The hero, Christian, encounters many obstacles in his quest: the Valley of the Shadow of Death, Vanity Fair, Doubting Castle, the Wicket Gate, as well as those who tempt him from his path (e.g., Talkative, Mr. Worldly Wiseman, the Giant Despair). But in the end he reaches Beulah Land, where he awaits the crossing of the river of death and his entry into the heavenly city. "Pilgrim's Progress" was enormously influential not only as a best-selling inspirational tract in the late 17th century, but as an ancestor of the 18th-century English novel, and many of its themes and ideas have entered permanently into Western culture. - Bunyan's autobiographical memoir, GRACE ABOUNDING TO THE CHIEF OF SINNERS,, written when he was 38 years old, is mostly a chronicle of his spiritual life; little is known about the practical details. Born to a humble family, son of a tinker, Bunyan was taught to read at a grammar school, but became a wandering tinker like his father. When he was 16, he was drafted into the army, where he served for three years, and soon after underwent a religious conversion, finding in Puritan ideas the remedy he sought for a restless conscience. In 1655 he became a preacher among the Bedford Baptists, who were known for pacifism and the strict interpretation of scripture. Married twice, Bunyan produced six children. After the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, it became against the law for anyone to preach unless he was ordained, and Bunyan was imprisoned in Bedford Gaol for 12 years. When he was released in 1677, he returned energetically to preaching in the more liberal political climate of the time. His great work, PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, was published in two installments in 1678 and 1684. Bunyan died after being out in the rain and catching a cold.
