우리 교회가 속해 있는 남침례교에는 전통적으로 부활절에는 애니 암스트롱 선교헌금(Annie Armstrong Easter Offering)을, 성탄절에는 라티문 선교헌금(Lottie Moon Christmas Offering)을 드려 선교를 지원하고 있습니다. 애니 암스트롱 선교헌금은 남침례교 산하 북미선교부(the North American Mission Board)에서 주관하고 있으며, 미국과 캐나다, 그리고 그들의 자치령에서 활동하고 있는 5,271명의 남침례교 선교사들의 활동을 돕는데 쓰여지고 있습니다. 그리고 라티문 선교헌금은 남침례교 산하 해외선교부(the International Mission Board)에서 주관하여, 러시아와 중국, 그리고 아시아에서 활동하고 있는 5,148명의 남침례교 선교사들과 23,486개의 개척교회를 돕는데 쓰여 지고 있습니다. 올해부터 우리 교회도 남침례교에서 드리는 애니 암스트롱 부활절 선교헌금과 라티문 성탄절 선교헌금을 드리려고 합니다.

The North American Mission Board

남침례교는 1997년에 기존의 선교부서인 the Home Mission Board, the Radio and Television Commission, 그리고 the Brotherhood Commission을 통합하여 북미선교부(the North American Mission Board)를 만들었습니다. 북미선교부의 주요 목표는 미국과 캐나다, 그리고 그들의 자치령에서 예수 그리스도의 복음을 전하는 선교사들과 남침례교회를 지원하는 데 있습니다. 북미 선교부에서 가장 중요하게 강조하는 3가지는 그리스도의 복음 증거와, 교회 개척 및 선교사 파송입니다. 대부분의 북미 선교사들은 애니 암스트롱 부활절 헌금의 지원도 받습니다.
The North American Mission Board was created in 1997 when the resources of three former SBC agencies (the Home Mission Board, the Radio and Television Commission, and the Brotherhood Commission) were combined. The primary responsibility of NAMB is to assist Southern Baptist churches in reaching the United States, Canada, and their territories with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We do this by focusing on three major objectives: sharing Christ, starting churches, and sending missionaries. Most missionaries are supported by the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering.

Who is Annie Armstrong?

Annie Walker Armstrong (1850-1938) was strongly committed to missions. Her example helps people today do missions, crossing barriers to meet both physical and spiritual needs. She showed people it was urgent to support the work of missions. She encouraged prayer for missionaries. She knew their work must be faithfully supported with prayer to the Father. She led in praying for missionaries’ safety and boldness in sharing the gospel. Annie believed in giving to mission work. She helped begin offerings for both home and international missions.

Annie Armstrong spoke out for missions. This led to the start of Woman’s Missionary Union in 1888, where she served as first corresponding secretary. She worked without pay, knowing this was God’s purpose for her. Writing about her work, Annie said: “No matter how heavy the burden, daily strength is given, so I expect we need not give ourselves any concern as to what the outcome will be, but think ‘go forward.’”

Annie “went forward” with her support of missions. She was one of the best friends a missionary could have. When Annie learned of a missionary’s need, she did all she could to meet that need. She went on mission trips. She spoke in many churches to tell women it was urgent to do missions and support Southern Baptist missionaries. It was right that the offering, which helped the missionaries she loved so much, was named in her honor in 1934.
